It includes a significantly expanded emergency department, advanced high-dependency and coronary units, improved cardiology services and a new cancer care facility. WA is still in a very strong economic position – Rio, BHP, Fortescue plan to spend billions to expand iron ore mines!

Australia’s biggest iron ore producers are spending as much as $US10 billion ($12.5 billion) on mines so they can keep pumping out shipments to China as demand from their biggest customer shows little sign of easing.

Forecasts of a slowdown in China’s steel industry are proving to be misplaced with BHP Billiton saying production hasn’t yet peaked and likely won’t do so until the middle of next decade, while steel-making raw materials will continue performing well over the coming 12 months…

Living in the outer suburbs, in particular around Perth’s north east, comes with many unique perks you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Just one look and you’ll see these areas are expanding and thriving into liveable communities.

It’s a lifestyle choice for sure, but one that comes with many benefits. So, let’s explore them.

Affordable living

The closer you get to the city, the more expensive and smaller your living space tends to be. Looking at median house prices alone, a place of your own in the city on average will set you back $745,000 compared with $339,000 in the new up and coming leafy suburb of Brooklands.

An outer suburb such as this is a great place to raise a family. With typically more space to spread out and live comfortably, you’ll benefit from a real sense of community. Vibrant and fresh, you’ll find brand spanking amenities and recreational facilities that are constantly expanding, and schools so close by.

Within these communities, you can also expect innovation at its core. These suburbs are leading the way in sustainable living, with eco-friendly solutions like solar power inclusions and rainwater irrigation for local parks becoming the norm.

Wide open spaces

Outer suburb communities are intentionally designed around an integrated network of connected walkways, with parks and modern playgrounds that are within walking distance from your front door. And the emerging Brooklands Private Estate is located just metres away from one of Perth’s best family outdoor attractions, Whiteman Park.

Wine country

Brooklands is your gateway to the Swan Valley – WA’s oldest wine region. Just 1.5km away, it’s quite literally in your own backyard and it’s bicycle friendly too.

Imagine spending your weekends exploring food and wine trails, sampling award winning wines straight from the cellar door or hanging out at family friendly breweries – there are just too many to mention!

Because you’re never too far from home, there’s always time to pop in and pick up some local produce such as cheeses, honey and preserves, olive oil, nougat and chocolate from specialist food outlets.

Natural attractions

For a healthy dose of nature and fresh country air, you’re just a short drive away from Bells Rapids, home of the Avon Descent and Walyunga National Park. Great for bushwalking, picnics and taking in the natural flora and fauna, you’ll be amazed by the panoramic views of the river valley and beyond.

Or, perhaps on the way home you would like to take the kids to watch some polo or one of the many other equestrian events that are held at the State Equestrian Centre located in the Swan Valley.

Understated eats

This area is a food lover’s haven, with many hidden café spots that rival some of the best brunch spots in Perth’s inner city. Some of our top picks include Maison St Honoré for the most authentic French crepes you’ll find anywhere, Slate Café to let the kids run loose, Yahava Koffee Works for finely brewed coffee and The Olive Tearooms for their exquisite high tea.

Immerse yourself in local heritage

The Swan Valley itself is steeped in local history and has a strong association with aviation and motor racing. Brabham itself is on the site of the former Caversham Airfield Base, which served as a WWII runway for the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. It was later converted into WA’s premier motor racing venue. The 1957 and 1962 Australian Grand Prix was held adjacent to the site, which saw the likes of motorsport legends Sir Jack Brabham, Lex Davidson and Bruce McLaren race here. It also played host to the 6 Hour Le Mans race in 1960.

Better quality of life

If you’re after a laid-back lifestyle, could you really imagine yourself anywhere else? Away from the hustle and bustle of crowds and congestion, but still close enough so that you’re not far from all the action in the city.

Sure, you might have to commute a little further, but with Booklands located in close proximity to the future Metronet Whiteman Park Station, getting to the city will be a breeze.

Your children, furry or not will probably be happier in the suburbs too. And as a family, you’ll feel safer and get back to a place where kids can roam freely, just like the good old days.
